The Demise of the Toilet Paper Fairy
Working Between the Lines to Combat Issues of Hunger, Homelessness, and Employment
10:00 AM at Goodman Community Center (Length: 1hr)
What we do isn’t hunger— but folks eat a lot safer if they can wash the pots and pans they cook the food in.
What we do isn’t education— but both children and adults can focus a lot better in class when they’re not worrying about being teased and razzed about body odor.
What we do isn’t employment— but it’s a lot easier for folks to get and keep a job when they’re able to shower and shampoo.
What we do isn’t health— but folks are much less prone to a whole host of other problems when they can brush their teeth.
What we DO is focus on the provision of personal and household hygiene products— those non-glamorous but essential things like toilet paper and laundry soap and tampons and toothpaste and razors and combs and diapers and shampoo— for families in need. This workshop is a discussion of the need for and benefits of having “Personal Essential Pantries” to aid in combatting issues of hunger, homelessness and employment.
Although many, if not most, food pantries try to provide some of these products on at least a semi-regular basis, the need goes far beyond what a shotgun approach can fix (and takes away valuable time and money from food pantries’ core mission). We understand the scope of the need, and how the regular and reliable availability of these products assists with hunger, with education, and with employment. We understand that these products are not frills; they are essential to full participation in the community.
This workshop will present the ministry of the Personal Essentials Pantry at Zion Church, and discuss our experience over the past three years has taught us about the magnitude of the need and how we might approach meeting the need.
