Collaborative Fundraising Project

Joining Together, To Make A Difference

The Collaborative Fundraising Project is a pilot effort to explore ways that groups of nonprofit organizations can join together to raise money.

The idea, at least its implementation for the Madison Nonprofit Day, is very simple. Each nonprofit interested in participating in the program recruits at least one business to make a donation. The donation is either a percentage of a specific day’s revenue or a set amount. The collective pool of funds is then split evenly among each participating nonprofit organization.

Many nonprofits don’t have the individual clout to recruit business donations, but a collaborative project allows the business to donate multiple organization with a single donation; as well as participate in a much larger event— the celebration of nonprofits in the Greater Madison Area with the 2010 Madison Nonprofit Day.

Businesses

Businesses are typically donating 5% or 10% of their revenue on Thursday, 5 August 2010, which is Madison Nonprofit Day. They sign a simple Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Madison Nonprofit Day and agree to send their donation to the Wisconsin Community Fund who will act as the distributer for collected donations.

It’s very easy for your business to be come involved, you can make a donation directly to the fund, without being recruited by a specific nonprofit or you can sign-up and add your favorite nonprofit to the participant list. The Memorandum of Understanding (.pdf) is attached to this post available for you to download.

Participating businesses will receive social media mentions on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and other sources; press release mentions; and inclusion on promotional materials. The Collaborative Funding Project will be promoted individually and as a part of Madison Nonprofit Day as a whole.

To participate in the Collaborative Fundraising Project your organization—board, staff, or volunteers—must recruit at least one business to the pool. That business can be large or small— your neighborhood coffee shop or a large grocery store, such as Woodman’s or Whole Foods.

We encourage you to recruit more than one business and remember the local business that make a difference in your neighborhood. The collaboration process isn’t just about a group of nonprofits coming together for funding, but also about sharing the spotlight with businesses who are willing to make a difference and wish to be known for doing so.

Madison Nonprofit Day
This project pilot is part of Madison Nonprofit Day, 5 August 2010, because the purpose of Madison Nonprofit Day is to celebrate and raise awareness the vibrant and multi-faceted nonprofits in the Greater Madison Area. The day joins nonprofit organizations of all walks— arts organization with social justice organizations, with food pantries, with civic organizations and more— together and works with the neighborhoods and communities that the organizations are in to build community.

The daylong event will include workshops and seminars for nonprofit professionals and volunteers; and a wide array of community engagement activities that include scavenger hunts, tours, blooming butterflies, art carts, potluck diners, and so much more. The activities put nonprofits in direct contact with their communities so that they can have a shared experience.
