The Toilet Paper Fairy Has Left the Building

meeting the need for personal and household hygiene products through the PEPartnership

Toilet paper, laundry soap, dish soap, deodorant, shampoo: these are all products that stay pretty much invisible to us, until suddenly they aren’t there. For most of us, their sudden absence is simply that whoever acts as the Toilet Paper Fairy in our homes has forgotten to get them replaced – but for families coping with poverty, they’re a very overlooked aspect of daily life.
The Personal Essentials Pantry at Zion Church has focused since its inception in 2006 on meeting this very overlooked need. Beginning with a (far too simplistic) goal of reaching 50 households in its first twelve months of service, the Pantry now has more than 3,600 households registered, with about 2,200 households actively using the Pantry. Through its experience, it’s learned a lot about the magnitude and importance of the need, and its impact on Dane County families.  Beginning this summer, the Personal Essentials Pantry is teaming up with other local agencies to synergize efforts in meeting this need, and to ensure maximum efficiency in distribution of the sparse resources available. This workshop will present the ministry of the Personal Essentials Pantry at Zion Church, what its experience over the past four years has taught us about the magnitude of the need, and how the new PEPartnership is addressing the need.
