CapTimes Honors Social Justice Champion Nan Cheney

Nan Cheney, who devoted her life to advocating for peace and fighting injustice and whose idea it was to found the Social Justice Center, died Friday from cancer, much to the dismay of Madison’s progressive community. Her work in establishing the Social Justice Center is legendary. When the Willy Street Co-op moved into a new location on its namesake street, Nan was instrumental in helping four nonprofits—her own Wisconsin Community Fund, the Madison Community Cooperative, the Tenant Resource Center and Citizen Action of Wisconsin—buy the old building.  The groups figured that if they shared expenses and staff, they would wind up devoting more of their precious resources to the people they served.
